The Sewing Shed in Kirby - Le - Soken, Essex, is a purpose built workshop set in a delightful country garden. We run all manner of classes that are suitable for everyone whether you are new to sewing or want to improve on what you know; and will give you the skills to help you make items for yourself, your home or to give as gifts. You can cover techniques like patchwork, quilting, free motion embroidery, appliqué, bag making, 'layer cake' and more - we also give time for students to bring in unfinished work to complete. As well as tutoring, we sell items hand-made by Sewing Shed 'regulars', and sell kits to make yourself or give as a gift, this includes easy sewing kits for beginners, and if you feel you need it, we can offer private tuition (prices on request) and gift vouchers.
PAMELA JAYNE - tutor
I started my sewing career 30 years ago in the sewing trade with Janome (Ed's note – they make sewing machines) and worked with the first fully automatic embroidery machine. I got promoted to Training Supervisor at their Head Office in Stockport where I learnt and taught a variety of classes, and became an expert on overlockers. I spent 10 years with Janome then went to work with Brother (Ed's note – they make sewing machines too) and with Franklins needlecraft stores where I carried on teaching sewing skills to clubs in 4 of their stores. I had the Sewing Shed built to continue sharing my love of all things machined as I really enjoy meeting people who are eager to learn the art of sewing and love being in a positions to pass on my knowledge.
JULIA JAYNE - Pam's daughter (and all round good egg)
I do all the background stuff for the Sewing Shed - admin, Facebook updates, answering questions and queries - but I also make the teas and coffees for everyone, pass the biscuits, and have been known to bake the occasional cake (Ed's note - they are delicious).
I tend to know where everything is when Mum can't find it and am always walking backwards and forwards between the Shed and the house!
Another job I have is to take care of our dogs whilst Mum is teaching. Mum's dog Dotty is usually around demanding love and attention - but my dog Flo is extremely timid and shy so they have very different needs.
Our dogs are part of the Sewing Shed but we know that not everyone likes dogs and could be allergic to pets so let us know if this is the case and they can be kept well away. Both dogs are very different and even if not around, conversation usually does get round to their latest exploits.
Hi, I am Dotty and am as dotty as my name! I love nothing more than to greet people and will always be trying to get someone to cuddle me. I have been learning that some people don't like me to be too cuddly so if that's the case, just ignore me and I will try the next person!
Hi, I am Flo. I am a very timid dog that you may never see. Occasionally you may hear me bark from the house when you enter the garden. If I am in the garden when you arrive, I will run back to my bed in the house. It's not you it's me. I have a very patient owner and sometimes venture into the garden when you are busy sewing. Please don't talk to me or look at me and my confidence will continue to grow.
