This is a collection of techniques that originates from France and some examples are: Lace trimmings, insertions, tucks, narrow ribbon and smocking, these are sewn onto a fine fabric such as linen or fine cotton.

Heirloom sewing is typically used on christening gowns and wedding dresses.
